After nearly three years in the professional work place I have gotten to a point where I am sick of my work wardrobe, and no buying of extra items seems to be fixing it (plus the budget is strained so even buying new items is restricted). I have noticed from the girls around me whose work attire I admire most, that they seem to have multiple multifunctional pieces that all fit together, this means they don’t require a large quantity of pieces to look good each day, just pieces that are classic and work together, with the odd statement scarf or accessory thrown in to mix it up.
So looking at my closet I can see my current work wear is far from this, so I am looking at what pieces I’d need to purchase to create a great work capsule wardrobe. These pieces would not need to be updated regularly, and instead of spending money on buying new work clothes every so often, I can instead buy cheaper statement accessories to change-up an outfit.
To start my search for great work wear, I did just a search of work office looks that I loved:

all from nordstrom.com

dsquared’s collection from style.com

all from asos.com
This has made me realise that most good-looking work wear is usually quite simple, but layered well, and made interesting by adding statement accessories.
I think the next step is going to be to take a look at what other people’s capsule wardrobe’s consist of – stay tuned for my discoveries.
Great idea! Do you work in a corporate office or is it more laidback?
My work clothes are the same as my everyday/casual clothes, but I feel like I should be prepared in case I ever work in a more formal environment…
Good luck!
Well it is corporate, but I am in Marketing, so some creativity and flair is expected. We don’t need to be in suits, but it still has to be smart.
It would be great to have the same wardrobe for both everyday and work. I’m hoping if I plan carefully enough, some of the pieces will be interchangeable into my casual wardrobe, just by adding jeans or flat shoes – that’s the plan anyway!
I think one of the secrets of hard-working work clothes is to choose plain colours and not prints. Some of the best items may look very dull on the hanger, so it is worth spending time trying things on.
Don’t forget to try sitting down. It’s easy to buy a skirt for work that looks great standing up, but way too revealing when you sit down.
I like the way you have included some colour, especially the pink skirt.
Yeah I think I need to get over the excitement that prints initially have, and go for more plain colours.
I agree with the layering. I’ve noticed a few girls at my work like to buy lots of dresses and then in Winter all they do is add a plain long sleeve top underneath with boots and they can wear the same thing through winter as well!
I think a couple of nice scarves is a good idea too! It can add a touch of flair to your outfit especially if you’re wearing things that are a little plain.
I’ve also seen a lot of the girls in HR wearing leather jackets!
I look forward to see some of your Work OTD
I need to master the art of layering to really make this work. I am going to have do a clean out, and see what I need to buy before I get some good OTD up – but hopefully I will have some soon
