Last Thursday evening my dad was in town for a night, so it was the perfect excuse to head out for dinner. My sister is staying off wheat at the moment so Mexican seemed like a great option (nearly everything is corn based – win!) and as Senoritas is one of the few mexican restaurants in the CBD that you can book a table, so we headed along to give it a go.
The interior was decorated with a day of the dead theme – skulls adorned the wine glasses and the paintings on the wall. Annoyingly though, it was very dark and noisy inside; it made the menu’s difficult to read, and talking a bit of a stretch – not the best for a family catch up.
The menu had plenty to choose from, with many vegetarian options for me (they were marked vegan, but I think this was an error as most had dairy components) and plenty of wheat free options for my sister. We ended up sharing the esquites (corn with mayo), tacos oaxaquenos (sweet potato tacos with black beans), ensalada de col (cabbage and jalapeño salad) and tostadas de cactus (cactus tostadas):
(excuse the photos – need to learn a bit more about taking photos in very low light)
All the dishes were delicious, in particular the cactus tostadas had a great flavour combination (plus I had never had cactus before – tasted quite a bit like capsicum).
There are some mixed reviews on Urbanspoon, but I definitely wouldn’t be put off returning – perhaps not for a family dinner though. Let me know if you have been along – what were your thoughts?
Hope you all had a good long weekend – I actually managed to be productive and got my sewing machine out for the first time in forever – I’ll have some projects to post later in the week.

I went when it first opened. I found it a bit meh – it was OK but not great. I prefer Mamasita.
I do love Mamasita’s as well – but it is just hard when they won’t take bookings (especially with a dad who doesn’t have a lot of patience!).
It’s changed a lot in the past few months, I thought the same thing when it first opened. It’s now consistently good. I think it’s better than Mamasita’s and you can book
I didn’t go when it opened – but certainly thought it was really good when I went just recently. Did to head back to Mamasita to compare though – I haven’t been there for a few years.
